ELAICHI: STEP WISE CARE AND GROWTH


Elaichi (Cardamon) plant comes under the list of most exotic plants; the reason behind this is its strong and sweet flavour which is used widely to enhance the taste of beverages and dishes. The plant also possesses beautiful white flowers with magenta lining which are sure to grab your attention. The 15 feet long plant has a separate small stalk on which Elaichi’s grow. It is very difficult to grow Elaichi in your home as the plant demands a lot of care and needs proper climatic conditions for its growth, however if you live in a place with warm and humid climatic conditions you can surely give it a shot.

STEP BY STEP CARE
  •  It is very difficult to grow Elaichi from seeds. The best way is to grow your plant by cutting method, for this one need a 4 to 5 inch of cutting and grow it in 14-15 inch of pot. If you are not comfortable with this you can get a small Elaichi plant from any nearby nursery.
  • Grow your plant in 14 – 15 inch pot with drainage hole and cover the bottom of the pot with a layer of small pebbles/stones and sand.
  •  Keep in mind that Elaichi loves moisture, so all your caring tips would be accordingly.
  • The soil for the same must be of porous nature so it retains moisture. 30% cocopeat (as cocopeat is best for holding moisture), 25 % sand, 20% Vermi compost or cow dung compost and remaining 25% Garden soil is the appropriate concentration for the soil mixture.
  • Make sure that soil is soft as roots of Elaichi plant grow and penetrate deep down the soil so for its free movement and for avoiding root bounding your media must be soft in nature.
  • Also add one – two teaspoons of any fungicide to your pot to avoid any type of fungus and diseases.
  • Place the pot in shade. Although the plant loves moisture and warmth but it is very temperature sensitive. Placing the pot in a spot where it receives indirect filtered sunlight for 5-6 hours would be the right step and would encourage its fast growth.
  • Watering should be done on regular basis keeping in mind that the plant loves humid climate and moisture.
